How Important is it to have a wedding cake?

Updated: Nov 7, 2019

Well, I put it to you that it’s very important! But then I would say that, wouldn’t I? I have written a whole other blog post on 5 reasons I think you should have a cake, so if you want convincing, you can check it out at the link above.

For now, let’s try and look at this from an objective point of view.

Your wedding day can be whatever you want it to be so, where does a cake fit into that?

Do you want a cake?

Maybe this should be as easy as yes or no but I do understand it’s a little bit more nuanced than that! Think of all the reasons people typically have cake at a wedding and see how they resonate with you. Do you want the cake cutting photos? Do you need something for dessert? Do you love cake and couldn’t possibly have a wedding without one? Are you excited to have something one of a kind that tells a story?

If you answered ‘no’ to all of these then maybe seriously think about whether you need or even want a cake. And yes, I know I am the cake lady but I am all for doing what you want. Weddings can be an expensive business and if you really really don’t want one, then you don’t have to have one!

Answered yes to any of those? Then good, we can dig a little deeper!

Are you going to eat it?

Let’s start with the basics? Do you like cake? Yes. Good!

No, well maybe a cake isn’t the way to go? There are plenty of alternatives now that can be an excellent stand-in for the cake: brownie stacks, macaron towers, donuts, dessert tables, cakes made from wheels of cheese. Think of your most favourite thing and we can make it into a beautiful and delicious wedding cake alternative.

Centrepiece or Afterthought?

So, you’ve decided you want a cake and you enjoy eating it, we can think about how the cake will fit into your day.

How do you want the cake to look and what role do you want it to play in your day? Do you want it to match in with your theme or venue? Do you want something epic and unique? Or do you just want a cake for the photos but need it simply to fit into your budget?

Which leads us nicely on to...

How much would you like to spend?

If you want a 4 tier cake full of handmade sugar flowers or carefully sculpted fondant characters, then you need to budget for it. The time, experience, skill and dedication that go into those things often get forgotten about and all play a role in the price of your cake. If you want something detailed then you need to budget for this at the beginning of your planning rather than as the last thing you do.

If you’re not that bothered and just want something that looks and tastes nice that meets your budget then have a chat with your cake maker (you can always get in touch with me!) and see what you can do.

At the end of the day the decision whether or not to have a wedding cake is all yours. Hopefully this has helped you think about how important a wedding cake is to you. Obviosuly, I am always going to love a wedding cake so hopefully, this has inspired you to go for your dream cake!
